In honor of Fire Prevention Month, firefighters from the Lakeland Fire Department in Ronkonkoma visited Cherokee Street Elementary to teach students about fire safety. The Lakeland firefighters taught the elementary students important safety tips during a schoolwide assembly, including rolling to the ground if they ever hear a smoke alarm since smoke rises. They also talked about the importance of installing a working smoke detector and making a family plan in case of an emergency. Students also had the opportunity to observe a firefighter dressed in full gear and listen to the sound that their air tank makes. Then, kindergarten, first and second graders headed outside to see the Lakeland fire trucks. Students were able to climb inside and learn about the many tools and parts on the outside of the trucks.
