CHS International Club creates worry dolls for Hispanic Heritage Month

In honoring Hispanic Heritage Month, Connetquot High School’s international club practiced the Guatemalan tradition of making muñecas quitapenas or worry dolls.

In the post-Mayan tradition, it’s believed that telling your worries to a worry doll will take them away. The dolls are characterized by their small size and represent the women of the region. They are also called chamulitas since they belong to the Chamula ethnic group of Guatemala.

Dovetailing off Mental Health Awareness month, the students combined the themes and created dolls to share with classmates as a means of supporting those experiencing anxiety. Special thanks to club advisors Ms. Roy-Caffrey and Ms. Madden for leading the project!
