At Edith L. Slocum Elementary, first graders in Mrs. Guastella’s class received a special, surprise package from a famous character in author Mo Willem’s book series, “The Pigeon.”

Inside the package was a letter from the pigeon, asking students about the rules and expectations they’d learned during the first week of school. Students then discussed why a school needs rules and read, “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!”

Students each received a special pencil with the words, “1st graders are fantastic!” and craft supplies with basic shapes to create a pigeon puppet. They also wrote and illustrated the rules that a pigeon must follow at school.
