On Sept. 11, seventh grade students at Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School learned about Patriot Day with the help of real artifacts brought in from the World Trade Center.

Social studies teacher Tiffany Prin’s husband, Tom Prin Jr., is a retired FDNY firefighter who heroically assisted on Sept. 11, 2001 and for months after the attacks. To aid in educating students, Mrs. Prin brought in artifacts her husband had collected from the rubble during his time at ground zero. This included firefighting gear such as his helmet and FDNY spotter jacket. She also presented a respirator mask, lanyards with office badges that were found without identification, a fire inspection report as well as pieces of steel, glass and a bolt from the Twin Towers.

After recollecting her personal experience and speaking more on the history of the day, she and teacher Mr. Agatstein told the class the inspiring story of, “The Man in the Red Bandana.”
