Science meets stewardship at Friends of Pickman-Remmer Wetlands

Science National Honor Society advisor Erica Dosch accompanied 30 members, alongside the entire 4th grade class from Idle Hour Elementary, on a visit to the Friends of Pickman-Remmer Wetlands Restoration Project. During this biannual trip, SNHS members supported ongoing efforts to restore the Connetquot River estuary in Oakdale by planting native species, maintaining wetlands and contributing to long-term environmental stewardship.
Students also heard from Andy Mirchel, Oyster Project Director with Save the Great South Bay, who shared insights on the importance of conservation and the critical role oysters play in restoring local waterways. He explained how thousands of oysters have been reseeded along South Shore bayfront sites, helping to naturally filter water, improve water quality, increase biodiversity and create vital habitats for marine life.
The experience offered students a meaningful look at how science, service and conservation come together to protect and revitalize local ecosystems.
