Slocum students shake things up with maraca art

As part of their social studies curriculum, Edith L. Slocum Elementary third graders are exploring cultures from around the world through hands-on projects.
In Ms. Higgins’ art class, students focused on Mexico by studying traditional Mexican textile patterns and using them as inspiration to design their own maracas. Students recycled plastic Easter eggs as the tops of the instruments, filled them with beads and attached clothespins as handles.
The maracas were then coated in plaster to form a solid structure and decorated with markers to reflect colorful traditional designs.
