CHS students get hands-on introduction to occupational therapy

Connetquot High School students in Mrs. Pollock’s Nurturing Young Children’s Development course welcomed guest speakers from Stony Brook University’s Occupational Therapy graduate program.
Andrea Chow and Megan Lee spoke to students about the meaning of “occupation” and its connection to occupational therapy. They outlined the similarities and differences among occupational therapists, physical therapists and speech-language pathologists, as well as how the professions collaborate in practice.
The presenters also discussed career pathways in occupational therapy and the range of opportunities available in the field.
Students were also able to work with adaptive equipment, including reachers, adaptive feeding tools and devices designed to assist with daily living skills such as putting on socks and shoes.
