Bosti Students Blend Creativity and Coding Using LEGO SPIKE

Ms. Kane’s fifth grade class at Bosti Elementary has been busy building, coding and getting creative! With guidance from CS&E teacher Ms. Russo, students recently took on a fun STEAM lesson using LEGO SPIKE kits.
The SPIKE kits include LEGO bricks, minifigures and smart components like motors, sensors and a hub, the programmable brick that serves as the “brain” of the device. To kick things off, each student chose one of six different vehicle builds: a river ferry, taxi, helicopter, boat, cable car or bus.
Once their builds were complete, students connected the hub and jumped into the coding phase using the SPIKE app. With block coding, they brought their creations to life, making them move, react and perform tasks.
Students tested their builds, fine-tuned their code and celebrated their successes. Along the way, they strengthened their collaboration skills and discovered how powerful teamwork can be when solving challenges together.
