Slocum’s Garden Club celebrates a successful fall planting season

The Edith L. Slocum Elementary School Garden Club ended the fall planting season on a high note thanks to the generosity of Mr. Porrini, a parent of two Slocum students, and his company, SiteOne Landscape Supply. Their donation of 30 colorful mums and 300 tulip bulbs, chosen in Connetquot's colors of red, white and black, helped transform the school’s courtyard and garden.
The Garden Club, made up of dedicated third, fourth and fifth graders, eagerly took on the project. As they planted the mums and bulbs, students learned not only about gardening techniques but also about the importance of timing and conditions for healthy plant growth. When a gentle rain began on their final planting day, it became a perfect teachable moment, demonstrating how moisture helps eliminate air pockets and promotes strong root development before the frost sets in.
This spring, the Garden Club is excited to see the colorful results of their efforts on the school’s grounds!
