Throughout Connetquot High School’s six-week extended school year program, students have the opportunity to sharpen and learn new skills for future employment.

Students in the program work closely with job coaches from the Suffolk Independent Living Organization who provide guidance with life skills such as cleaning, cooking, baking, working at the school store, washing cars and much more. At the program’s core, students are working to become more independent and are incorporating these skills into their daily lives.

One activity that serves as an example is when the students grew vegetables in the Tower Garden, an aeroponic vegetable growth tower. The tower acts as a hands-on teaching tool, providing engaging opportunities to bring curriculum to life. By growing their own basil plants, students learned about responsibility, the importance of making healthy food choices as well as incorporating more vegetables into their everyday meals.

By completing the program, students continue to build their skills and are better prepared for the upcoming year.
