From Oct. 23-27, the Connetquot Central School District celebrated “United We Stand/Red Ribbon Week,” focusing on the importance of student safety, living healthy lifestyles, being drug-free and standing up to bullying.

Throughout the week, schools across the district held themed spirit days, representing different, important topics. For example, students and staff wore their favorite sports team’s jersey to “team up against drugs” and students wore camouflage to dress like the community heroes that serve them every day. Some classes wore pajamas to “be kind to your mind, relax and unwind” while others wore baseball caps to “put a cap on drugs.”

Buildings across the district held multiple presentations and assemblies, including one from Metro-North Railroad’s TRACKS program on railroad safety and from Northwell Health Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center on healthy habits and drug prevention. Officer Fernandez from the Suffolk County Police Department visited classes, speaking to the dangers of vaping and how to be safe on the internet and social media. With the kindergarten and first grade students, he spoke about how police officers help the community and certain safety rules such as wearing a helmet when riding a bike, wearing a seatbelt in the car and when to call 911.

Students also signed pledges to “be kind to their minds” and took part in assemblies where they learned about making healthy choices tied to the physical, mental and social areas of their lives and how to show kindness to themselves and others.
