Nurse's News

Dear Duffield Community,

Now that we have settled into the 2020-2021 school year, I can finally take a breath and say Welcome Back Duffield Family! I am so happy to finally meet our new Kindergarten Students and see the return of many familiar faces. We are so fortunate to be here together.

There have been many temporary changes regarding the Health Office this year due to Covid-19. The Main Health Office is where I am stationed for the day. This is considered the well room. Right across the hall, is the “Smiley Face” room, where the ill students are waiting to be picked up. That room is supervised at all times by a health care professional, but I am overseeing and responsible for the children that are there, and I will still be the person that communicates with the parents. As you know, our District is adhering to the NYSDOH guidelines with regards to how the pandemic is managed in the school setting. I am so happy to report that our community has been very receptive to helping me with adhering to those guidelines to keep our school as healthy and safe as possible. I cannot thank you enough.

There are a few other changes this year…While Physicals are still required for Grades K,1,3,5, and new students (including virtual students), I will not be performing the usual screenings in those grades for hearing, vision, and scoliosis. If these items are a concern for you regarding your child, I would suggest you ask your Pediatrician to screen for those this year, or ask for a referral to a specialist. Our school doctor, Dr. Gil will still be coming after January 2021. If your child’s physical is not received by then, it will be scheduled with Dr. Gil. Virtual students will be offered an appointment to come to school when our school doctor is here. Also, the students will be going out in the colder months for both gym and recess. Getting fresh outside air is very important and beneficial for everyone this year. Please be mindful of this with regards to sending your children into school with proper clothing. You may be asked to deliver a coat to school if your child does not arrive with one. If you are unable to provide a coat for your child, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I will do everything I can to try and help you in a confidential manner.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at (631) 467-6010 Ext. 3 or e-mail me at jwalters@ccsdli.org. I will be very happy to speak with you! I’m looking forward to a great school year! 😊

Sincerely Your Nurse,
Jo-Ann Walters R.N.
