Dear Cherokee Families,

It is with great enthusiasm that I introduce myself to you as the new Principal of Cherokee Street Elementary School. As the former Director of English Language Arts in Central Islip, Assistant Principal in Smithtown and teacher in Sachem, I look forward to bringing my knowledge and experience to continue the Cherokee tradition of providing a challenging and supportive environment for all children.  Assuming the principalship of the special place that is Cherokee Street School is truly a gift that I accept with gratitude and commitment.

It is my intention to continue the traditions and reputation of excellence at Cherokee and work collaboratively with all of you to develop the academic, social, and emotional health of all our students.  In the past few weeks I have had the opportunity to familiarize myself with Cherokee and I have had the pleasure of meeting some of the staff, PTA, and community members.  I am delighted to work with such an involved and active community which is so beneficial for our students.  Through our conversations it is clear to see the pride and dedication everyone has for the children and their learning.  I have been working closely with Ms. Murthy, who has been a great resource, as we ensure a smooth transition to the start of school.

On a personal note, my husband and I enjoy spending time with our young daughter and watching her learn and grow.  Being a parent is truly one of life’s most joyful experiences.  My passion for educating children and helping teachers support students has only grown more since becoming a mother.

It is a great honor to become a part of the Cherokee family!  I eagerly look forward to the start of the school year when I will have the privilege to get to know and work with you and your children.  I hope you and your family have a wonderful and relaxing rest of summer!

Mrs. Jill M. Lahey
