Drivers Education

June 24, 2020 - Update

Dear Parents,

I would like to thank you for your patience and understanding regarding the challenges completing our spring Drivers Education Program. I would like to share with you the letter drafted by Ms. Villareale, the Assistant Superintendent for Business and Operations. Please read the attached letter and decide which option is the preferred for you and your child. Students who wish to complete the program whenever Governor Cuomo has permitted us to do so do not need to do anything, we will work on rescheduling as soon as this becomes possible. If you would prefer the prorated refund, please send this request to me (csosa@ccsdli.org)  and Ms. Marino (pmarino@ccsdli.org) so the refund can be processed.

My sincerest appreciation for your understanding during this ‘pause’.

Thank you and stay safe!

Cheryl Sosa

April 27, 2020 (Important Drivers Education Information)

Dear Parents and Students,

I hope this communication finds you well as we navigate through these unsettling and unprecedented times.

As you are all aware Governor Cuomo has ordered schools remain closed until May 15.  This date may be extended as we move forward.  NYS has ordered a pause as well for all Driver Education programs. At this time we do not know when we will be able to return to ‘traditional’ instruction, but are hoping when it does we will be able to start back at the point where we left off.  Online learning has ceased and will resume as soon as we are able to verify when instruction is approved by the State.  We are hoping if unable to complete our program by June, we would be able to do so during the summer.

At this time we are unable to consider a summer program for new students and will have to wait for further instruction from the State.  As details become available they will be shared so we may make an informed decision regarding completion of the program and how it affects our students.

Please feel free to contact me via email if you have any further questions regarding the program at csosa@ccsdli.org.  I appreciate your patience and understanding during this process.

Sincerely,

Cheryl Sosa

Dear Parents or Guardians,

Please read this letter carefully. It will explain the policies regarding Registration for the
Spring 2020 semester of Driver Education. Registration runs from Wednesday, January 8, 2020 through Friday, January 10, 2020 from 7:30 A.M. to 1:00 P.M.. Attached are Spring Enrollment Application and Code of Conduct forms, as well as a schedule of all classes. Classes begin on Thursday, January 30, 2020. Students will register for a 90-minute lecture class and a 90-minute driving lesson which meet once a week for 16 weeks. Please refer to the Spring Class Registration form for available days and times of lecture classes and driving lessons. Driving space is limited to four (4) students per car, therefore, scheduling flexibility may be required. The fee for Driver Education is $490.00. Registration procedures are as follows:

  1. Students that are in 11th & 12th grade will register by submitting a parent-signed Spring Enrollment Application, Code of Conduct form and payment beginning Wednesday, January 8, 2020 to Ms. Marino in Room 181. Payment must be a Money Order or check for $490.00, made payable to Connetquot CSD, memo-student name/Driver Education. Money Orders are strongly recommended. No cash is accepted. Students may register before they have a permit but must have their permit before the first day of class.
  2. Placement of driving and lecture classes for all registered students will be based on grade level and the student’s birthdate. On January 13, 2020 a class roster will be posted outside Ms. Marino’s office. It is very important when choosing your 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice when registering that you consider all other commitments (Clubs, Jobs and Sports).
  3. There is a mandatory orientation meeting on Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at 6:00 P.M. in the Auditorium. Both the student and parent must attend this meeting.

New York State Department of Education mandates that in order to qualify for a Certificate of Completion (MV-285) a student must:

  1. Be 16 years old and hold a valid Learner’s Permit prior to the first day of class.
  2. Complete 24 hrs. of in-car training with 6 hrs. behind the wheel and 18 hrs. of observation. Please note that DMV requires students to complete 50 hrs. of supervised driving and submit an MV-262 form, signed by a parent or guardian attesting to the completed hrs. with 15 hrs. occurring after sunset, before a student may take their road test.
  3. Complete 24 hrs. of lecture classroom training and earn a grade of 65 or above for both portions of the course. There are no excused absences. All absences must be made up. An incomplete cannot be made up during the next semester without paying for the course again. Students involved with sports or other activities should carefully consider their schedule when choosing days and times of driving and lecture classes.

Thank you for your interest in the Connetquot High School Driver Education Program.

Sincerely,

Michael A. Moran, Principal
