Duffield kindergarteners mend furry friends during Teddy Bear Clinic

Kindergarteners at Helen B. Duffield Elementary School in the Connetquot Central School District learned about injury prevention during an in-school field trip with Stony Brook Children’s Hospital’s Teddy Bear Clinic on Oct. 23.

Students in Mrs. Caiola’s class first talked about different ways to stay safe, including how to properly buckle their seatbelt, protect their brains by wearing a helmet, and the importance of sitting in the backseat of the car. To exemplify the importance of wearing a helmet, student volunteers participated in the egg drop. While one egg equipped with a “helmet” dropped with its parachute, the other, without protection, fell and broke. 

Next, students, dressed as doctors and nurses, brought their stuffed animals for a check-up at the Teddy Bear Clinic. Learning about medical procedures in a fun and interactive way, the kindergarteners applied bandages, gauze, and splints to their furry friends. Students learned that while accidents happen, most injuries are preventable.
