Congratulations to Connetquot High School student Varshith Basa who was selected to represent New York State as one of the two representatives for the National Youth Science Camp being held in West Virginia! Varshith was chosen for providing evidence of superior academic proficiency, leadership in school and community activities, and a passion and curiosity for the STEAM fields. Established in 1963 as part of West Virginia’s Centennial Celebration, the National Youth Science Camp annually provides for 102 delegates (two from each state and the District of Columbia) a three-week, STEAM based experience in which delegates exchange ideas with leading scientists and other professionals from academic and corporate worlds. A highlight of the camp is the lecture series. Each day, delegates participate in two world-class lectures from STEM experts on a wide range of innovative and relevant topics.
Then, directed studies provide opportunities to delve deeper into a topic with an expert. They are designed as mini courses. To add to the fun, students participate in seminars. Seminars are informal, interactive experiences with someone who is knowledgeable and passionate about a topic. Past seminars have included juggling, cooking, practicing a language and playing Ultimate Frisbee on the green. While NYSC provides many opportunities for delegates to engage with STEAM topics, it also boasts a robust arts program. Staff provide delegates with many opportunities to learn techniques and create in multiple art mediums and join performing arts ensembles. The delegations also travel to Washington, D.C. where they can meet congressional members, tour museums and attend a panel discussion held at the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
