Connetquot High School’s ENL (English as a New Language) students welcomed Suffolk County Police Officer Fernández into their class. Officer Fernández shared his story as a child of immigrants, only becoming truly bilingual as an adult. He encouraged the language learners to, “get comfortable being uncomfortable”, stressing how challenging it is to be open to taking risks with language, emphasizing the value of being bilingual. Being able to communicate in both English and Spanish provided him the opportunity to succeed and achieve his dream. Officer Fernández spoke about setting goals, taking advantage of opportunities, studying, working hard and making the choice to be the best you, inspiring students.
